Food

We often hear about the struggles of feeding a growing population of humans, but the sad reality is that humans don't grow food in order to solve hunger problems; they grow it to make money in any way the market trends can make use of their products.  The idea that we can't give up farmland lest we forever suffer the consequences of not being able to use that land to "feed people" is built on lifetimes of us hearing false information.  If it were true it would simultaneously mean we are already doomed, for we've already converted nearly half the land in United States to agricultural use while still hearing that we're struggling to feed people.  Continuing this trend alongside a shocking population growth that will soon eclipse our current population would indicate we have no choice but to use 100% of the earth to grow food within the near future just to survive. What a beautiful sight!  Nothing but human crops and housing structures with none of the original wonder that was once planet earth remaining.

How was it that this planet, before humans set to killing everything that wasn't us in order to raise our own exclusive food, once supported massive numbers of every species in existence all while remaining a healthy, beautiful, thriving system?  No, our approach to food and the necessity of dominating the landscape just to survive is completely flawed.

But speaking of exclusivity, any crops grown in Point Reyes (or anywhere for that matter) represent direct conflict with the animals there, for once again, this is not about eating, this is about profit margins.  The wildlife that live there will try to find ways to survive as we continue the human trend of taking their habitat and turning it into exclusive human crops.  As these creatures "dare to try to eat" they will in so doing become enemies of the farmers, just as the handful of elk are already declared enemies just for eating grass.  If this is how we respond to the elk foraging on grass imagine the response to animals invading crops?  And imagine how many more species of animals, well beyond just elk, will potentially be attracted to these crops?  So, next comes poison. Next comes pesticide. Next comes trapping. Next comes shooting.  Much of this won't officially be allowed, but it doesn't mean it won't happen.  Think that's an overreaction? I'm already told by Point Reyes locals who are too afraid of the ranching mafia to speak publicly, that the ranchers currently kill wildlife within the seashore.  And as the park service continues to hand power to the ranchers what was once not allowed will soon be accepted.

It saddens me that it seems inconceivable for people to even consider the possibility of giving some of the earth back to its non-human inhabitants.  Lord knows they treat it better than we do.
18-wheelers carrying hay into the seashore as supplemental feed for cattle. #pointreyes #shameofpointreyes
Still frame from video of an 18-wheeler hauling hay into the seashore as supplemental feed for cattle...not feed for humans.  #pointreyes
