When the TNC agreement was announced, on January 8th of 2025, wildlife advocates began celebrating that the elk would be able to roam freely while the ranching community complained about the end of cattle grazing in the seashore. A year and a half laterI can't help but point out that the opposite is closer to reality. The elk fence itself is still mostly in place while the miles of barbed wire fencing of the ranches also remain and continue to hinder wildlife movement. Cattle have been grazing the seashore every single day since the announcement and are still there today. The elk are not free and ranching is not gone. Yet the ranchers got paid. To leave. Again. Former McClure Ranch had cattle stretching from one end of the horizon to the other as shown here on December 5th, 2026, nearly a year after the TNC announcement. As of today, August 4th, cattle continue to graze from the southern end of the seashore to the northern end while elk continue to be hindered by both the fences and the cattle.
