Plan a screening!
Amazingly, the majority of the public have no idea what's happening in Point Reyes, therefore awareness is a good starting point for creating change. This documentary was filmed and edited over the course of a year and is a comprehensive look at the history and current situation. Plan a screening of the film to help spread awareness!
- Find a suitable venue.
- Discuss available dates with the venue and choose one.
- Confirm equipment available at the venue.
- Plan it
- Promote it
- DO NOT send the filmmaker or panelists venue ideas and contact information then leave the planning to them. They are already working on other events and projects related to the issue so dumping the planning process on them is not desired. Take the reins, you can do it!
Venue
The venue can be anywhere. This is a national park unit enjoyed by people not only across the United States, but across the world. Public comments from anywhere matter. Ideally the venue can hold a good sized crowd to make it worth your while to put the effort into promoting the screening. But the film is available to the public and can be shown to any size of crowd at any time.
Dates
The sooner the better so as to raise awareness before the public comment period ends on September 23rd, but the battle will continue so any date is better than no date.
Panelists
The filmmaker and a panel of experts who contributed to the film may be available to attend the screening for a post film discussion, but even if not, you should still plan the screening. Do not limit your plans based on panelist availability. The venue is more likely to have limited availability therefore you should nail down the date first, then try to get a panel member to commit to attending. In some cases only certain panelists will be available. Most live somewhere near the bay area.
Permission
If you are fighting for animal rights and to save public land from private profit you DO NOT need the filmmaker's permission to screen the film. It is available free of charge and was created for the greater good of raising public awareness. Letting the filmmaker and panelists know about your event will help them promote your it.
Equipment
The venue should ideally have a large projection screen and sound system so that a large audience can see and hear the film. At the least a large TV screen should be used. Not necessary, but helpful, are microphones for the the discussion period. The film can be shown from a laptop, thumb drive, or even streamed directly from the web.
Plan it
If you don't want an empty audience you and your team will need to put a fair amount of work into the planning process. Create a Facebook event page and an Eventbrite page. The Eventbrite page allows the event to be found by Google searches better than the Facebook event so both used in conjunction with each other are best. You can use any content from any existing social media posted by Shame of Point Reyes and allies to help promote your event. There are several free event listing sites where you can list your event in order to be seen by more people via search results.
Promote it
Once all the above are ready make sure to promote the event steadily and regularly. Feel free to tag ShameofPointReyes in your posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
